Swans dancing in the moonlight as Stokes’ strike secures all three points against Portland United at Thornhill Park.
A much-improved second-half performance from Portland saw them come close on several occasions before being reduced to 10 men with minutes to go.
It was an even affair in the opening exchanges, with both sides coming close, most notably the travelling side, who had shouts for a penalty waved away following an excellent goal-line clearance.
The Swans would continue to get chances, with Jack Smith and Casey Collins both coming close.
With the pressure mounting and Slimbridge looking more dangerous with each attack, the breakthrough would finally come through Stokes.
Stokes’ initial cross found Collins, who saw his shot from a tight angle scuffed by a defender into the path of Stokes, who smashed it into the back of the net to put the home side ahead at the break.
HALF-TIME: 1-0
The second half started with another clearance off the line, this time from Collins, who was at the heart of everything for the Swans, as once again penalty shouts were waved away by the referee.
Despite sustained pressure from the away side, the hosts did manage to momentarily relieve the pressure, Theo Lynden with a first-time effort that ultimately missed the target.
Portland would continue to push for an equaliser, forcing Cal Godfrey into a few saves, without properly testing the goalkeeper, a credit to the resolute Swans defence.
With five minutes left of the game, the visitors were reduced to 10, with Sam Gadsby sent off for an early shower for his reckless tackle on Olly Sully, with the Swans number nine unable to continue.
Now a man down, the challenge for the visitors was too much, as the hosts held on for a hugely significant win, as they picked up their first win at Thornhill Park of the season.
