Slimbridge 0-1 Larkhall Athletic
Thursday 1st October 2026
Slimbridge were left to rue missed chances, as they fell to an agonising defeat to Larkhall Athletic.

Just days after picking up their first win of the season away at Falmouth, Slimbridge returned home looking to build on that result.

There was plenty of optimism around Thornhill Park, which was only added to following a bright start from the Swans.

Chances for Casey Collins, Jack Smith, Joe Stokes and Olly Sully saw the hosts come close in the opening 45.

Those missed chances were punished not long after the break, with Ben Cleary putting the hosts ahead with what would prove to be the deciding goal.

The Swans started quickly and forced an early save from Larkhall goalkeeper Liam Armstrong as Levi Francis provided an inch perfect cross aimed for Collins, whose header was tipped onto the bar.

The pressure would continue to grow, and this time it was Smith with the cross for Sully, who ultimately saw his header end up over the bar.

Next up it was Stokes’ turn to try his luck, Smith did well to find the midfielder, who turned well to avoid the challenge, before eventually firing straight down the throat of Armstrong, for whom the best was yet to come.

With just seconds left before the interval, Slimbridge once again found themselves on the attack. A beautiful ball down the wing found Smith, who did well to find a yard of space, before shooting.

His shot looked destined to be heading into the far corner, but for an outstanding save by Armstrong, who at full stretch managed to tip it onto the post and to safety, bringing an end to a strong first-half showing.

The Swans, who would have been full of optimism after the first half, were sent straight back to reality within 10 minutes of the restart.

A looped ball over the top found Milo Murgatroyd, who expertly picked out Cleary, leaving the number nine with the simple task of finding an open net to put the Larks ahead.

The game then became more of a midfield scrap, with both teams receiving multiple bookings, although the spirit of the Swans was not dampened.

In the dying embers, it was now or never for Slimbridge, who really should have been level after Luke Bence’s chance.

A floated delivery found the head of Bence, who was all alone eight yards from goal, but the centre-back couldn’t hit the target.

A final chance for the Swans would come in the form of a Stokes free kick on the edge of the box, despite initially looking good, there was too much curl on the ball, which sailed past the post, bringing the full-time whistle.

Slimbridge are back at Thornhill Park on Saturday when our old friends Bristol Manor Farm are the visitors. (3.00pm)
