Covid was an unknown word and Sam Turl (Now Marine's Captain) played in a side that won 2-1, and the Swans played at what was then called Wisloe Road rather than Thornhill Park. Let's just say it was a while back.

Add to the mix a 7-2 drubbing for the Swans from Marine at Thornhill Park ten days ago in the League, and the result of this FA Trophy tie would seem to be easily predicted, but it was not to be. 

A performance with much to acclaim it produced what would definitely be counted as a shock result given the team's positions in the Southern League, as the Swans resisted early pressure, grew into the game, and even dominated the second half, with Olly Sully scoring the decisive goal in the 77th minute to send the Swans into the next round. 

Bobby Wilkinson, Marine's Manager, said after the game that Slimbridge had 'thoroughly deserved' their victory, and it was a delighted set of players, Managers and fans who celebrated together at the final whistle. 

Slimbridge gave a debut to Keeper Callum Godfrey, who joined the club on Joint Registration with Forest Green Rovers, and who acquitted himself very well given his late arrival into the organisation. 

In conditions that varied from torrential rain to bright sunshine, with thunder and lightning coming into the mix as well, the visitors made a good start to the game - a neat move between Casey Collins and Jack Smith saw an early opportunity ruled out by an offside flag, while, on 17 minutes, a dangerous break involving Collins and Smith saw Sully played in down the Slimbridge right, but he screwed his effort wide when well placed. 

Marine settled down though, but two very good crosses from Conor McDonagh and then Gabriel Reivers were unable to be converted. 

Collins and Smith continued to cause problems for the home side, with Smith's effort on 22 minutes too high as Slimbridge continued to match their opponents. 

On 28 minutes, McDonagh should have done better with his effort from Marcel Lewis' cross, and a superb block from Josh Blyth stopped an effort from Salhin Akubakar getting close to goal. 

As the game came towards the break, Marine were on top - Lewis was off target with a great opportunity, while the same player was wide again five minutes later after some neat interplay with McDonagh. 

The final act of the first half was a superb block from Luke Bence to a cross from Reivers, but the teams went in to a thunderstorm, and level at the break. 

Slimbridge came out well again for the second period - Smith had a good chance cleared early on, while Charlie Mathews Free Kick was just too high for Sully to connect on 54 minutes. 

As Slimbridge pressed, Leighton Green was denied by a great block, before Bence was off target with his effort. 

As the game drifted towards the hour mark, Jacob Rodgers made a superb run which resulted in a corner, which came to nothing. But the momentum was definitely with the visitors. 

Smith had a golden opportunity when through on goal with 65 minutes gone, but Marine Keeper Joel Halliday made a good stop with his feet from Smith's shot. 

Three minutes later, Collins' header from a corner was saved by Halliday helped by the post, and Marine went up the other end and another superb Blyth block denied Reivers. 

With 13 minutes remaining the deadlock was finally broken - a cross from Alex Bell reached Sully, and his neat turn and shot left Halliday no chance to put the Swans ahead. 

Marine's best chance in the final minutes came from Lucas Wilkinson, but he pulled his effort wide, and the Swans played out four minutes of stoppage time to record a memorable victory. 

Two Cup Wins in a week - attention now returns to the League on Monday when the Swans go to SC Inkberrow to play only their second League game of the season. Kick Off is 3.00pm.
