Slimbridge AFC joint-manager Mike Palmer has challenged his side to embrace the opportunity of facing League Two opposition this Saturday.

The Swans welcome The Robins in one of the standout pre-season fixtures this summer, with the game providing another important step in preparations ahead of the club’s return to Step 4 football following last season’s promotion. 

Looking ahead to the match, the joint-manager is expecting a tough test against quality opposition but believes it’s exactly the type of challenge his players need. 

“I’m expecting a really competitive game against a very strong Cheltenham Town side. They’re a well run League Two club with talented players and staff, so we know the challenge that lies ahead, and we have a huge amount of respect for them.

“For us, it’s exactly the type of fixture you want in pre season. It gives our players the opportunity to test themselves against full time professionals, challenge themselves at a really high level, and continue building towards the new season.

“Of course, we’d all like to put in a strong performance, but our biggest focus is seeing the lads continue to develop the work we’ve been doing throughout pre season, both individually and collectively.

“It’s also a chance for the players to enjoy the occasion. They’ve worked incredibly hard over the last twelve months to earn promotion, and fixtures like this are a reward for that commitment and effort. They’ll relish the opportunity, and I’m looking forward to seeing how they embrace the challenge.

“Most importantly, I hope it’s an enjoyable afternoon for everyone involved and a game that both clubs can take plenty from.”

With supporters set to enjoy another blockbuster summer friendly, Palmer is hoping to see another strong turnout at Thornhill Park and believes the occasion is about far more than just the football. 

“I’d encourage anyone who enjoys football to come along, because I genuinely think it’ll be a fantastic afternoon.

“Opportunities like this don’t come around very often, and it’s a chance to watch two local clubs come together in what should be a really competitive game.

“More than that, it’s an opportunity to experience what Slimbridge Football Club is all about. We’re a genuine family club, built on the hard work of volunteers, staff, and supporters who give up countless hours because they care about the club and the local community.

“Whether you’re a regular at Thornhill Park or visiting for the first time, you’ll receive a warm welcome. There’s a great clubhouse, excellent food, friendly people and, hopefully, an enjoyable game of football.

“By coming along, you’re not just supporting the players on the pitch you’re also supporting a community football club and the incredible people behind the scenes who make days like this possible every single week.”

As preparations continue for the new campaign, Palmer insists the opportunity to face professional opposition is one the squad will look to make the most of. 

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for our players and one that we’re really grateful to Cheltenham Town for providing.

“When you come up against a full time professional side, you’re tested in every aspect of the game. The tempo is higher, the quality is higher and you’re constantly challenged to make good decisions both in and out of possession.

“Those are exactly the sorts of experiences that help players improve. They’ll learn a great deal from the game, and that’s invaluable as we prepare for life back in the Southern League.

“At the same time, it’s important that we don’t lose sight of who we are. We’ll approach the game with confidence, work hard for one another and stay true to the values and identity that helped us earn promotion last season.

“If we do that, regardless of the result, it’ll be another really positive step in our preparations for the season ahead.”
