After a game that will not linger long in the memory, Slimbridge and Downton played out a goalless draw that saw the game go to a penalty shootout. The home side held their nerve to score all their efforts and progress to the Fifth Round of the FA Vase, leaving the Swans just failing to match their best ever performance in the competition.
As was to be expected from two sides that had reached the last 32 clubs in the country still in the competition, the entire 90 minutes were characterised by nerves from both teams.
The early exchanges saw Jack W Smith have a long range effort for the visitors while Ollie Griggs was off target for the hosts, but it was a frantic, scrappy start that, to be honest, never got out of that mode.
The sides continued to swap chances as the first period progressed - Jack W Smith's effort was blocked, while Brett Pitman's header for Downton was well wide as neither team really imposed themselves over their opponents.
Two more missed chances - from Josh Bertie for Downton and then Jack W Smith for the Swans, saw the half time break arrive with Jack W Smith's effort that drifted wide on 33 minutes being the best opportunity for the Swans.
The second period saw more of the same - Pitman had another header wide for the hosts before a sweet move involving Toby Soule and Jack W Smith set up Aaron Evans-Harriot, whose effort brought a good save from Downton Keeper Ross Casey.
On 55 minutes, Pitman was way too high with another effort as the game still refused to set into any kind of pattern - Jack W Smith had a couple off opportunities to break, but the ball refused to run for him as a stalemate began to develop.
Casey's mishit clearance saw Joey Stokes unable to keep his lobbed effort on target before Steve Sarkodie made a superb stop to deny Archie Whitfield, while at the other end, Casey made a good stop from Evans-Harriot as the game drifted toward the 90 minute mark.
6 minutes of stoppage time was not enough to separate the sides, and so the game went to penalties - Going first, Sam Blackie, Ollie Barnes and Joey Stokes all converted their penalties, but unfortunately Alex Bell pulled his effort wide in the penalty lottery, and Evans-Harriot saw his effort saved, and successful conversions by Whitfield, Pitman, Dec Greg and Luke Delaney saw the home side edge into the next round after nine of the ten scheduled shots had been completed.
Slimbridge return to Hellenic League action on Tuesday night (20th January, 7.45pm) when they entertain Highworth Town at Thornhill Park, before they stay at home for next Saturday's League game against Fairford Town (24th January, 3.00pm).
