Slimbridge 1-0 Thornbury Town
Saturday 11th October 2025
Following on from last weekends stoppage time turnaround at Cribbs, it was another late show show at Thornhill Park on Friday night, with an 87th minute winner seeing off Thornbury Town.

Following todays results, the Swans remain in third position in the Hellenic League, four points behind Roman Glass St. George and Droitwich Spa, but with three games in hand on both sides.

Thorns' Manager Richard Joyce had set his side out to disrupt the Swans, with crunching tackles and harrying tactics ensuring there was no let up in the action on the field, and his tactics proved spot on. It did however, mean that the game developed into a stalemate as neither team gained a particular advantage.

It is certainly true that Thornbury Keeper Mackenzie Welsh was without a doubt their man of the match with a few superb stops, but the game looked like ending in deadlock until Jack Hughes' strike inside the six yard box with three minutes remaining broke the hearts of the travelling fans, including a superb group of lads who travelled up the road and set up behind the goal to show their support for the away side.

The Swans head the best of the early exchanges - Jack W Smith saw his first minute effort saved by Welsh, while a scramble in the Slimbridge box saw Ash Ozua unable to convert for the visitors.

Thornbury had their chances but their shooting was wayward - Josh Oliver and Callum Chalmers would have wished they had done better with early efforts, while Joey Shutt's free kick which was just off target and then Jacob Rodgers' effort from Raiyan Ahmed's cross which brought a superb stop from Welsh were the pick of the early exchanges for Slimbridge.

On the half hour mark, a flurry of chances for the hosts failed to gain any advantage, with another fine Welsh save from Ahmed and then two efforts from Jack W Smith coming to nothing, leaving the sides level at the break.

The second half continued the thread of the first one - Oliver had a great chance for Thornbury but was off target with his effort on 63 minutes, while Jack W Smith and Jack Hughes failed to convert a couple of chances for the home side.

As the game entered the final ten minutes, James Tainton brought yet another good save from Welsh before the games decisive moment on 87 minutes - the ball was played down the Swans right flank to Theo Browne. His cross found Hughes, who battled with two other defenders, found the ball loose and drilled it home from the edge of the six yard box to secure the points.

As the game entered stoppage time, a handbags bust up saw Slimbridge lose Bogdan Mara to a straight red card, but Slimbridge held on to record another priceless win.

The First Team travel to Worcester Raiders on Tuesday Night (7.45pm) for a highly anticipated game between fifth and third.

After a magnificent demolition of Bishops Cleeve Under 18's in the Cheltenham Floodlit League on Tuesday (Scorers: James Tainton (3), Theo Browne (2) and Albie Neveu), the 18's are back in action tomorrow (Sunday, 11th October 2.00pm) at Thornhill park, when they entertain Gloucester City Under 18s in the GFA Under 18's County Cup.

They then host Cinderford Town at Thornhill Park on Tuesday (14th, 7.30) in their next League game.

Team: Kovacevic, Mara, Haswell (Evans 70), Kang, Ponting (Mathews 51), Soule (Hanson 78), Shutt, Ahmed (Hughes 62), Browne, Jack W Smith, Rodgers (Tainton 58)
