Slimbridge 1-0 Hartpury University
Saturday 10th August 2024
Two games this week for Slimbridge - the first saw them outmuscled at Glevum Park by Tuffley Rovers in a 3-0 loss before they beat Hartpury University 1-0 on Saturday at Thornhill Park in the first ever meeting between the two sides.

It was a disappointing and disjointed performance against a Tuffley side that were, as always, fired up for a local clash, and who thoroughly deserved their win.

The hosts took the lead on nine minutes when Karnell Chambers latched onto a through ball and neatly beat Olly Phillips in the Slimbridge goal.

Five minutes later, it could have been two when Harley Mustoe's turn and shot saw his effort rocket back into play off the Slimbridge bar, and then Elijah Simpson was off target with a header from a Free Kick as the home side bossed the game.

It was 18 minutes before Slimbridge had their first effort on goal, with Shiyak Sutherland's effort after good work from Jack Smith was saved by Ex-Swan Luke Merchant in the Tuffley goal.

After Brad Bevan was too high with a good effort for Tuffley, and then Will Hawes just off target with a free kick for the visitors, the home side doubled their lead on 36 minutes.

Kieran Alder looped a ball across the Slimbridge box and Bevan was on hand to bundle the ball in at the far post to put Tuffley well in control.

With Myron Turner limpid off before the break with a groin injury, it was a 45 minutes to forget to the Swans.

Slimbridge made a better start to the second period, with Sutherland and Hawes going close.

On the hour mark Nathan Dennis' cross saw Theo Clayson's effort at the back post saved by Merchant, before Slimbridge had their best chance of the game to get back into the contest - Jack Smith's run and shot was clawed back into play by Merchant, who made a great stop, and the rebound fell to Clayson, whose effort rebounded off the Tuffley post to safety.

Merchant made another good stop from Hawes' effort, but with two minutes remaining Chambers notched his second of the night to record Tuffley's third, and put the game to bed.

Speaking after the game, Joint Manager Tom Deakin could not hide his feelings - 'It was a disappointing performance, although you could probably over analyse it because it's a loss in a local derby.

We did create some good chances, but then our execution in what we wanted to do wasn't there throughout the game. It's a bit harder to take than a normal loss in the manner of the defeat.

It is what it is, and we have to work on getting it right for Saturday. The lads will move on, it's not one to dwell on, and at the end of the day, it's one game at a time. That's all it's going to be and all it's got to be.'

The Swans rebounded with a win against Hartpury University on Saturday at Thornhill Park, with Theo Clayson notching his fourth goal of the season to secure the win.

Hartpury had a great opportunity to take the lead in the first minute when Chieck None was left unmarked at a corner for a free header that missed the target, before Will Hawes saw his effort from a Jonty Welch corner off target at the other end.

In a strangely flat first period, Louis Manning saw no-one get on the end of his dangerous cross for Hartpury, while Jacob Towns and Manning again spurned good chances for the visitors, before Slimbridge took the lead on half time with a complete sucker punch - Jacob Rodgers and Shiyak
Sutherland worked the ball well down the Slimbridge left flank, and Jonty Welch slung a dangerous cross across the Hartpury goal with Theo Clayson waiting at the back post to convert from a yard out and put the hosts ahead at the break.

The tempo of the game remained unchanged after the break, with the second half also a decidedly scrappy affair - Manning was too high with a couple of early chances for Hartpury, and then Kone missed two further efforts as Hartpury created the better opportunities, but the Slimbridge back line, superbly marshalled by Charlie Hitchings, held firm.

Olly Phillips made a superb stop on 64 minutes, tipping Soloman Kent's effort over the bar, before Slimbridge created a couple of opportunities of their own - Firstly, Sutherland's effort was saved by Hartpury Keeper Ryan Smallwood, before Ben Hands' shot cum cross very nearly sneaked in at the back post.

With five minutes of the eight additional minutes played, Hartpury had a glorious chance to equalise, but they were denied by first the post and then the crossbar, and Slimbridge held on for the three points.

Team: Phillips, Hunt, Rodgers, Hands, Evans (Harper 68), Hitchings, Clayson, Welch (Pinchard 90+3), Hawes (Mills 83), Soule, Sutherland (Dark 88)
